ストーの『アンクル・トムの小屋』（1852）を中心に、
アメリカ文学における反奴隷制文学の系譜を考察。
19世紀半ばのルネサンス期に隆盛を迎えた「反奴隷制文学」の萌芽を
18世紀に見出し、ストーと同時代の作家・作品から、
アメリカ現代文学の始まり『ハックルベリ・フィンの冒険』までを検証する。
