Award-winning black TV journalist Nita Wiggins reflects on the civil rights climate in the U.S. and offers an honest account of surviving newsroom sabotage in this timely memoir. A man-made obstacle course greets Wiggins--an optimistic girl pursuing a career as a sports journalist on the Dallas Cowboys beat.

How well does the Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed the year of her birth, protect her opportunities and eliminate discrimination?

_____________

The 2021 new edition of Civil Rights Baby: My Story of Race, Sports, and Breaking Barriers in American Journalism recognizes the changing civil rights landscape and the actions of several heroic people. Societal changes since 2020--and included in the updated book--include

• the congressional testimony of three Americans, each over 100 years old, who survived the deadly Greenwood/Tulsa Race Massacre,

• the murder conviction of former police officer Derek Michael Chauvin,

• the installation of Kamala Harris as U.S. Vice President,

• the new college sports rules that allow athletes to earn money for competing.

This book goes beyond individual striving.

The Civil Rights Baby title pays tribute to the mother of the modern civil rights movement, Mrs. Rosa Parks, an icon whom Wiggins interviewed and with whom she shared private moments in 1988. Wiggins personally crosses paths with and is fortified by Mrs. Parks, Muhammad Ali, and other resistance icons known the world over.

Wiggins is today an international commentator, a sought-after voice by French, Cameroonian, and Senegalese networks, as well as by the Washington Post, Pacifica Network, Le Figaro, and France Info.
